Chimney questions that come up here
Older houses can have flues that have been converted from fireplaces to furnaces or water heaters over the decades. CSIA says a change of appliance or fuel calls for a Level II inspection, and HomeGuide lists a converted fireplace needing a different liner as a common reason to reline. If the property is on the Philadelphia Register, masonry and vent work also needs Historical Commission review.
What a contractor will usually check
- What the chimney serves (furnace, boiler, water heater or fireplace) and whether each appliance has a proper flue
- Liner condition, usually with a camera during a Level II inspection
- Crown, cap and flashing, where most chimney leaks start
- Mortar and brick on the stack above the roof
See typical prices in the cost guide and the permit rules in the rules guide.
