Chimney questions that come up here
Larger houses can have more than one flue and higher, steeper roofs, which affects access and price. HomeGuide lists the number of flues and roof height and pitch among the main cost factors for relining. A Level II inspection is the usual starting point before relining.
What a contractor will usually check
- What the chimney serves (furnace, boiler, water heater or fireplace) and whether each appliance has a proper flue
- Liner condition, usually with a camera during a Level II inspection
- Crown, cap and flashing, where most chimney leaks start
- Mortar and brick on the stack above the roof
See typical prices in the cost guide and the permit rules in the rules guide.
